I can hardly believe it, but neo-con Charles Krauthammer gets pretty much everything exactly right in his new Washington Post Op-Ed about religion and politics. I might quibble a bit at the straw man argument about the “certain kind of liberal” supposedly arguing that laws should never have religious motives, but then again, I can’t deny that there are such people (I’ve met them), though I would dare Krauthammer to try and actually name any that are major or influential public figures. Other than that, he gets it.
Why am I so surprised? Because Krauthammer is quite far from my favorite pundit. Even putting aside obvious political differences, his most despicable trait is his habit of exploiting his training as a psychiatrist to smear political opponents as mentally unstable, employing phony “diagnoses” of their behavior and arguments. Still, anyone who describes Intelligent Design as “tarted-up creationism” can’t be all bad.
